MADELEINE COCOLAS

Madeleine Cocolas is an Australian born, New York based composer, musician and sound designer.  Using acoustic instruments, electronics and noises, she blends ambient, experimental and neoclassical elements together to create music that is ethereally beautiful yet underscored by dark, and sometimes menacing tones. Her critically acclaimed debut album ‘Cascadia’, released in 2016 through UK based label Futuresequence, was based on her project ‘Fifty Two Weeks’ whereby she wrote and recorded a piece of music every week for a year. 

In addition to her solo practice, Madeleine has written music for film scores, dance performances and soundscapes for various galleries, and previously worked as a music supervisor, where she sourced and licensed music for a number of award winning Australian television programs.

SOUNDSCAPE

In creating my soundscape for ‘Curation', I wanted to explore and break down boundaries between ‘natural’ and ‘built’ environments by seamlessly weaving together sounds of the wilderness with noises of bustling NYC streets. In addition to these raw sounds of surrounding environments, I wanted the soundscape to have an ethereal melodic quality to reflect the beauty of the artwork being exhibited. The soundscape is further tied to the artworks through the incorporation of sounds of rustling paper, whereby the paper recorded is the actual paper being displayed in the exhibition. Above all, I wanted the soundscape to be a pleasurable, immersive experience for listeners and to support the exhibition’s artwork, rather than distract from it.
