ANDREW CREWES

Andrew Crewes was born in Melbourne in 1974 and studied Fine Arts (Painting) at Monash University, graduating in 1996. Long interested in representation and the world around us, he began working with glass in the late 1990s before seeking work with a number glaziers to learn more about the structural and aesthetic potentials of the material.

Now working with Toucan Forged Glass in Caulfield, Andrew works in a range of techniques including leadlighting, slumping, fusing, sand blasting and painting. His panels, light boxes and lamps are typified by their use of strong line and colouring.

Working with glass allows Andrew the hands-on material engagement that he enjoys while enabling a more dynamic exploration of light than painting is able to provide. While drawing on a distinct visual language developed over years of creative practice, Andrew’s works continue to explore an ever expanding universe of fictive worlds. Unaccompanied by history, inhabited by unknown life forms – these worlds are imaginary and rich, offering viewers a window of escape into a lush universe of a highly crafted reality.
